Information Society Technologies

Overview

Intended to stimulate the development in Europe of both hardware and software technologies and applications at the heart of the creation of the information society in order to increase the competitiveness of European industry and allow European citizens the possibility of benefiting fully from the development of the knowledge-based society.

The budget of the IST Thematic priority in the 6th Framework for the next four years is 3.625 MEUR, which includes 100 MEUR for the development of Géant and Grid initiatives.

The focus on IST in FP6 is on the future generation of technologies in which computers and networks will be integrated into the everyday environment, rendering accessible a multitude of services and applications through easy-to-use human interfaces. The vision of »ambient intelligence« places the user, the individual, at the centre of future developments for an inclusive knowledge-based society for all.

The objectives of IST are divided into three technology building blocks:

• microelectronic components and micro-systems,
• communication infrastructures and software technologies,
• user friendly interfaces,

and into the applications addressing main societal and economic challenges like

• trust and confidence,
• systems for citizens,
• sustainable growth and improving competitiveness,
• complex problem solving.

IST Workprogramme 2005-2006 covers the activities of the IST thematic priority in FP6 for last two years of FP6.
